A Recipe: Blackberry Pie

Ingredients

  • 4 cups fresh blackberries
  • 1/2 cup white sugar
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 recipe pastry for a 9 inch double crust pie
  • 2 tablespoons milk
  • 1/4 cup white sugar

Directions

  1. Combine 3 1/2 cups berries with the sugar and flour. Spoon the mixture into an unbaked pie shell. Spread the remaining 1/2 cup berries on top of the sweetened berries, and cover with the top crust. Seal and crimp the edges. Brush the top crust with milk, and sprinkle with 1/4 cup sugar.
  2. Bake at 425 degree F (220 degrees C) for 15 minutes. Reduce the temperature of the oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C), and bake for an additional 20 to 25 minutes.

** I only had enough blackberries for what the recipe called for but there was definitely enough room for more. I also added about a tbsp of butter to the filling after putting in the black berries. I brushed a mixture of egg whites and butter on the top along with the milk. For a little more tang, add a hint of lemon juice. Delicious!

Quilt love.

Quilts remind me of hot Southern summers. I love them. Each one is so personal and unique, like a little story...

Happy Friday!

Sorry I'm so late on this but I wanted to wish you all a happy weekend! What are you up to? Tonight I am having a low key evening and watching Rhinestone with two of my lady friends. Ha, It should be a hoot. Sylvester Stallone won the Razzie for worst actor the year it came out so I'll let you know how awesomely bad it is! Then tomorrow I'm off to Water World. YES!

Cool things...

A combination of my two of my biggest fears...water and heights. Some people really are fearless.

This video makes me happy.

Everyone has a little country in them.

Usually I'm not big on pink but this dress is marvelous!

I love, rainbow stripes.

Newly discovered Etsy artist.

Craft Inspiration.

So craftster.org recently held its second annual "Total Board Game Revamp Competition" and I am incredibly impressed with the results. The Twister raincoat got 1st place but some of my other favorites are CandyLand comes to life (the runner up by a hair- I wanna play so bad!), theChess board jewelry holder, the Trivial Pursuit Disney dress and the Scrabble purse. Look at all this creativity! What would you make?

Grace Kelly.

I just recently watched a showing of Hitchcock's To Catch a Thief at the Mayan Theater here in Denver and was quickly reminded of Grace Kelly's beauty and poise. In fact, she was recently on the cover of the May issue of Vanity Fair. Can you imagine? Almost 30 years after her death and she's still winning covers over current celebrities. There is also an exhibition going on right now at London's Victoria and Albert Museum showing many of her famous dresses as well as the gown she wore to accept her Oscar in 1955 for The Country Girl. Fashion icon, princess and highly acclaimed actress, it's no surprise that she is still being celebrated today. Swoon...

Oh boy! It's the weekend!

Hello my dears! How are you doing this lovely Friday? I am currently at work (oops) wrapping up the week- just itching to get out of here. Tonight I've got no real plans. BUT the rest of my weekend is chock full- tomorrow is the Westword Music Showcase and later that night is the grande opening of Beauty Bar which is conveniently located a hop, skip and a jump from my house. My brother-in-law has a show at Herman's Hideaway which I will try to squeeze in and Saturday and Sunday is the Gay Pride Fest and parade. Whoa. That's a lot. And don't forget about Father's Day on Sunday!

Hey also, look here...

Take me there: Route 66 road trip.

Simple summer [street] style...

To me summer style means airy and effortless. A little can go a long way. These ladies are all doing something very right...

World Cup.

Okay so I am just going to admit it....I have not watched one bit of the World Cup. Phew. I feel better. But seriously, soccer (ahem football) kinda bores me. What about y'all? Are you hooked? Perhaps I should at least try to watch a game and give it a chance. In the mean time I am definitely digging these World Cup themed nails...

Mean cards.

I ALWAYS have a hard time with cards. I literally stand in front of the card aisle at Target for at least 30 min every time looking for the perfect one. I usually aim for a mix of funny and sweet but you can throw sentimental out the window- those are the worst kinds. These "mean cards" are so creative though. They are incredibly simple and the drawings are almost bad but I love them!
Inside: "Note the difference"

Inside: blank

Inside: "I call you a friend."

Inside: "Nothing else is coming...I knew you'd want it that way. Happy Birthday!"

Inside: "refrain, and seek instruction"

Hello darlings! How did this week go for you? I have to say, I am pretty glad it's all over. I am not too sure what is in the cards for me this weekend. There has been talk of bowling, maybe some dancing and definitely some sleeping in. Hope it's a good one and I'll see you on Monday!

Painted streets.

The Denver Chalk Art festival was this weekend and although I didn't go, I do find the subject quite fascinating. I can't believe what these people can create out of such a difficult material. I mean have you ever tried to draw anything impressive with chalk? I can remember outlining hop scotch games and writing my name in multi-colors but nothing that can compare to this kinda thing...

I took this in Florence where sidewalk art is a very popular form of street performance.

It's...Monday!

Sorry folks. I just can't stay indoors lately. Sitting down and writing posts when it's so darn beautiful outside, well, it's hard! So I am back...for now. How was your weekend? Mine seemed to fly by without me really noticing. On Friday night I went over to my friend Aly's house for some swimming and supper. She just moved back to Denver from D.C. for the summer and we had a reunion gathering with lots of old friends and good food. I even baked a blackberry pie! Saturday I went to the Denver Art Museum for their free day with some buddies. There is a new photography exhibit all the way up on the 7th floor that I really enjoyed. After the art museum I hurried on over to a bbq where my friend was celebrating graduating from nursing school. And Sunday, it was rest day. Brunch and napping. Well, that is that, time to get back to work :(

Here is some cool stuff I should have told you about earlier...

Loving these 1950's photos shot for Levi's...fashion comes full circle.

Take a look: the surprising truth about what motivates us...this is so, so true.

Up there. The dying art of painted advertisements.

Congratulations Kimia + bits of my weekend!

I must say San Francisco has yet to disappoint me. I didn't play the tourist this time around which was really because of time. I concentrated on seeing old friends and meeting new ones and just enjoying being somewhere different. Kimia's wedding was gorgeous and so was she...seriously, the prettiest bride I've ever seen. She is one of those friends that you brag about...you know the kind. She's smart, has a kind heart, and is extremely talented. I am not going to gush anymore than that but her engagement photos will blow you away. You must look at them. That is one sexy couple. Okay so here's what I was up to...
Me and Melissa in Mission Dolores Park.

Melissa's cute little place right by the park where she kindly let me crash for 4 days
