DIY: Instagram photos, a look backwards...

It is so easy to grab my phone, click, choose a filter, and like magic, an 'old school' photo appears. Before Instagram existed this whole process would have been much more complicated. It involved physical action, money and way more anticipation. You needed to own the camera, buy the film, load the film, take the photos, process the film, pay for the development and then, finally, you get your photo. For me convenience and often times, curiosity are the reasons why I love Instagram. However, I am still a huge romantic when it comes to actual, tangible film. Which is why I love this poster. It teaches you how to get Instagram results with real life cameras. Kinda backwards, right? Well that's technology for ya! I want to try this so bad!

Bits of my weekend...

Recently, my friend Erin (the one on the right) moved from Boulder to Denver and we are so happy to have her! Coincidentally, her new place is only a block away from our apartment which makes it even more exciting. It's starting to feel a little like we are living in a real life Friends episode around here--people popping in randomly, coming and going as they please. It's pretty awesome.

We coined this weekend 'girl's weekend' because it sort of accidentally became one. Friday night was spent talking around the kitchen table with 3 pints of ice cream and 3 giggling ladies. Saturday I guiltily went to the gym and then later enjoyed some cocktails and photo booth fun (pictured ablove:) at this bar. Sunday, Erin, Becca, and I decided to treat ourselves to a thai massage which was the best idea ever! I believe $25 for a one hour massage is some of the best money I've spent in a while. The weekend was capped off with some frozen yogurt and a chic flick. Yep, I said it, total girls weekend.

Bits of my weekend...

After a very long hiatus, I decided to break out the holga this weekend. Oh, I have missed you! It was a calm weekend. A lot of tea drinking, cooking, cleaning around the house and movie watching. We did take a trip to the library where I checked out a book and some magazines. No cake baking yet, I'll keep ya posted!

Happy Friday!

Sometimes in the winter I get a major case of cabin fever. Right now I would kill for a mini road trip or to be swept away for a bit. Where would you go? In my daydreams lately I visit Iceland, Sweden or anywhere that has a wonderful secluded cabin. Mmmm, that's my happy spot.

My weekend is really pretty free. I have this impulse to bake a cake, so I might do that. I need to find a friend with a birthday coming up or something so I can have an excuse, although you never really need an excuse for cake. I was thinking something that looks like this or this, we'll see. Have a lovely one folks!

Wandering Wednesday: Parsley.

Parsley is quickly becoming my new favorite lunch spot. The menu is healthy and fresh and I always walk away feeling good about what I've just eaten. Every time I go I stare at the menu forever but end up getting the same thing (I'm addicted to the mediterranean tuna sandwich). The bread is crusty and wonderful and the sandwiches are large enough to split and splurge on something else. They also have tasty smoothies and a variety of vegetable juices if you're looking for a little pick me up. Mmmm, I'm getting hungry just thinking about it!

Tuesday Tunes: First Aid Kit

The first song I heard by this Swedish sister duo was the title track of their new album, The Lion's Roar, and I was blown away. Their voices are so incredibly powerful. You might recognize them from this video that was touring blogs and such a few years ago. You can stream their new album on NPR's first listen now, or when it hits shelves January 24th.

My weekend. According to Instagram.

This weekend's primary focus was cooking and relaxing. Fine by me! I finally got a case for my phone (1), tried out a new-to-me lunch spot (3&4), unwrapped 64 caramels (5,7,8, totally worth it!), attended a dinner party with homemade gnocchi (6, amazing!), broke in my new apron (9) and finished it off with a nice bubble bath (2)!

Have a beautiful weekend!

I feel like it's snowy everywhere but here right now. We had a little teaser on Wednesday but it melted by midday. It's supposed to get up to 60 degrees again this weekend-- geeeez Colorado, get it together! Weekend happenings include dinner tonight with some pals (I'm making these, couldn't resist!) dancing here on Saturday and I'll probably round it out with a lazy Sunday. Happy Weekend guys!

Wandering Wednesday: Black Hawk (yes, it's true)

I am not sure if it was the low budget commercials or the name that threw me, but I've never had any real desire to visit Black Hawk. It seemed like a sad, Vegas wannabe, like Atlantic City or something. So when my friend Kelsey (the adorable one in the top right corner) suggested we all go for her birthday I kind of shrugged my shoulders and said, "sure!". We got a good deal by renting a hotel room in the middle of the week (and cramming 6 people in two double beds!) and to my surprise I was actually starting to get excited about this little adventure of ours. So one random Wednesday after work, I hopped into my car, with my google map directions in hand, and headed towards the mountains. I zig-zaged through the canyon, up the hills, past the small mountain towns and thought to myself, 'where am I?'. Finally, I turned a corner and saw this tiny little town growing out of the mountainside, filled with lights. I was immediately impressed. Black Hawk is cool!

So, erase all your preconceived notions guys. We had a total blast. We stayed at the Ameristar, which is the biggest hotel in Black Hawk (our room was on the 32nd floor, eeek)-- and we didn't leave the premises once. In the 18 or some odd hours we were there we discovered that we are all pretty bad gamblers, buffets are depressing and never have decent food, and a hot tub and an indoor pool can make up for anything. Also, when combining a hotel room and 6 awesome friends, you can't really go wrong. Without getting into too much detail, it was totally worth the measly hour and 15 min drive. Although I would have liked to explore a bit more of the town, I would recommend keeping your visit to a maximum of 36 hours. So if you're looking for a short road trip...just sayin'.

Take a look: tiger in a jar, the art of bread making.

this video makes baking bread seem almost as tranquil as taking a bath. I love the mood, the dim lights and the softness of this film. It really captures the patience and love that is required when making a good loaf of bread. tiger in a jar, you always know how to speak to me.

Christmas Break. part two. + have a great weekend!

Here are a few more shots from my vacation. The last several are taken at my Dad's house in Jackson, TN, where I grew up until I was 6. I probably could have taken a couple rolls of just this house, there is so much to explore. If you can't tell from the photos, my trip was divided in half. Half in Jackson, half in Nashville. There are tons of family pictures as well but I'm going to spare you all those since I've shared so much already this week.

Hope you've had a fabulous start to 2012 so far! Have a lovely weekend!
